Saving an history enriched mill and converting it into a modern family home.

The original mill was constructed using a rich red coloured brick unique to this area which had been transported along the Bude – Holsworthy Canal from the clay works at Red Post approximately 5 miles away.

Atelier 3 prepared a detailed planning application for a residential conversion of a former Mill, Round House and adjoining barn in North Devon.

Adjoining the Mill the Roundhouse and barn were both built from local stone.

Our design needed to be sympathetic to the historical mill. Original features of the building were to be retained wherever possible and where alterations or extensions were necessary these were to be done in a contemporary style. A visually lightweight structure was designed to link the mill and barn allowing the large open plan spaces of the roundhouse and mill to be retained. This approach was chosen as we felt it was important not to imitate or domesticate the former mill.
